The band, who last week released their user-customisable album online, told the News of the World that they had approached the singer-songwriter for help on their track 'Man On Mars' through producer Tony Visconti.
Drummer Nick Hodgson said: "Tony texted David asking for his suggestions to finish off a verse [on 'Man On Mars'] and he came up with a couple of lines.
"I'm such a big Bowie fan I can't believe I'm saying this, but they just weren't right, so I've missed out on a Hodgson/Bowie writing credit. Gutted!"
Visconti has worked with Bowie on several albums between his 1969 breakthrough Space Oddity and his last studio LP, 2003's Reality. The producer has helmed the Kaiser Chief's third album The Future Is Medieval.
Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson last week suggested that his band had been "threatened" when they tried to pull out of a TV collaboration with Girls Aloud in 2008.
