The bulb has been a staple of fire stations in Livermore, California for more than a century and the longest its ever been turned off for is only one week. It was originally created by Adolphe Chailet, a rival of Thomas Edison. Nowadays the bulb has its own fan club and some visitors travel thousands of miles to come and view it for themselves.
While the average hardware store light bulb lasts only 1,000 hours, this bright bulb has lasted 110 years. . . proving once again that they 'don't make them like they used to'.
