John Louis Visciotti, an ex-convict who served time in prison for stabbing a pregnant woman, shot and killed Timothy Dykstra, 22, and seriously wounded Michael Wolbert, 21, during a $120 robbery after luring them to a remote spot in Santiago Canyon on Nov. 8, 1982. The shooting was supposed to eliminate all witnesses, but Wolbert somehow miraculously survived after he was shot at close range in the eye. Wolbert identified Visciotti as the ambusher. Visciotti's case has been affirmed by the California Supreme Court.
1984
Richard Delmer Boyer stabbed to death and murdered Francis Harbitz, 67, and Aileen Harbitz, 68, in December 1982 during a robbery at the couple's Fullerton home. Boyer admitted he went to the Harbitz' home on the day of the murders, but he claimed he did not intend to kill them. Instead, he contended he snapped under the influence of drugs and alcohol after Aileen Habitz offered him something to eat, and Francis Harbitz, who suffered from arthritis and walked with a cane, greeted him. Boyer repeatedly stabbed and bludgeoned the couple, washed the knife and took their wallets. His case has been affirmed by the California Supreme Court.
