Congrats to the MURDOCK Study for enrolling their 5,000th participant! The project team has been hard at work over the last two years educating the general public, enrolling participants, and getting research projects underway. The goal of the MURDOCK Study is to reclassify health and disease using genomic technologies and electronic health records.
As a longitudinal health study (one that follows a group of people over time), it hopes to identify genomic linkages across major chronic diseases. For the general public, this means that the study aims to help improve the identification of patients at risk for various diseases and identify new treatments or strategies, including identifying the biomarkers that would make one person more responsive to a certain type of treatment than another. Over time, this could reduce treatment risks and costs.
The MURDOCK Study is still actively recruiting participants, so if you haven’t enrolled yet, learn more about it on their website. I enrolled a while ago and it was really no big deal. They had me fill out a form, and then I went in for a study visit where they took a little blood sample and checked my weight, blood pressure, and pulse. I joined because I wanted to have a small contribution in the effort to improve the research on health and disease. If you live in the Kannapolis or Cabarrus County area, help them reach their goal of 50,000 participants!
