New Oregon Coast Surfing Contest Debuts in September

Surfing photos by Pamela Clark of Goose Hollow, in Seaside(Lincoln City) – It’s got a funny name, and it’s something a little different in the surfing competition world of the Oregon coast – or just about anywhere. And it will begin in Lincoln City next month.

The first annual Either/Or Surfing Team Cup has been scheduled for the weekend of September 15 and 16 in Lincoln City, Oregon. It features a competition on the waves that’s done with a bit of a twist, as well as a big party at a local bar.

A1 Beach Rentals, Lincoln City. Perfect for large family vacations all the way down to a getaway lodging for two - with over 25 vacation rental homes to choose from. A breathtaking collection of craftsman or traditional beachfront homes, or oceanview houses – from one to seven bedrooms. In various areas of Lincoln City and overlooking the beach, with some in Depoe Bay. All kinds of amenities are available, like hot tubs, decks, BBQ, rock fireplaces, beamed ceilings and more. Some are new, some are historic charmers. Lincoln City, Oregon. 1-(503)-232-5984. www.a1beachrentals.com.

Depending on weather that weekend, it may actually become a pool tournament instead of a surfing competition – hence the title of “Either/Or.” However, with the Oregon coast usually basking in what is known as the “second summer” in September – a time where it’s the warmest of the year in the area – there’s not much of a chance the event will wind up indoors.

Teams will compete against each other for the coveted Either/Or Trophy. Jason Garding, one of the event organizers, notes the winning team will also get a plaque, "so years down the road you can show your grandchildren how rad you used to be.” This one-of-a-kind event is limited to 32 surfers in eight teams, and will utilize a unique team format. The event will run with two teams per game (actually called a “heat” in these circumstances), with each team surfing two quarters per game with the winning team moving on towards winning the team cup. Each team member will have their best wave score combined with the best wave score for their other team members. The team with the highest cumulative score wins the event and the coveted trophy.

Another different aspect of this event is that all surfers in the water during each heat will all be from the same team, surfing cooperatively with each other. They won’t be surfing against each other as is seen in every other surf event. Surfers in the Either/ Or Team Cup are encouraged to share strategy and to change water approach tactics to maximize the best surfers for the best conditions during their heats.

Breathtaking high panoramic beach views from oceanfront rooms, spacious family suites & fully equipped cottages. Known for gracious hospitality, the sparkling clean Sea Horse features a heated indoor pool, dramatic oceanfront spa, great whale watching, free deluxe continental breakfast, conference room, free casino shuttle & HBO. Fireplaces, private decks and spas are available in select rooms. Close to shops, golf, fishing & restaurants. Pets are welcome in select rooms. Senior discounts. Kids 18 and under stay free in their parent's room. Very attractive rates.

20 gorgeous homes sleep up to 18; doubled that with some side-by-side homes. Some pet friendly. Cottages to massive homes; new oceanfront to renovated historic beach houses. All over central coast w/ Lincoln City, Otter Rock, Boiler Bay and Nye Beach. Long list of features, including barbecues, large decks, antique furnishings, wood stoves, gas fireplaces, hardwood floors, Jacuzzis and hot tubs. Most have movies, music, books. Gift basket w/ goodies in each

This event is a benefit for a 7th through 12th grade water club in the Lincoln City area.

A surf themed raffle, surf movies filmed with local Oregon surfers and live music will be offered on Saturday, September 15, at BK Mulligans Sports Bar, starting at 6 p.m. The Saturday night event will be free and open to the public.

The event will run a total of eight hours of heats, with each heat scheduled for fifteen minutes. Teams will surf two heats each. Teams must have at least two shortboarders (boards 7'4" or shorter) and one longboarder (boards more than 9'). Teams must register in advance, as team space is limited. Individual team riders will be registered the day of the event in a beach registration process, or at BK Mulligan's Sports Bar Friday night between 6 and 8 p.m.

The entry fee for each team will be $150. Checks for team registration can be mailed to Jason Garding at Either/Or Team Cup, 1745 NE West Devils Lake Rd., Lincoln City, OR 97367. Include the team name, a team contact person, a contact phone number and e-mail address with the team registration check. Judging for this event will be provided by the surf judging group Pacific NW Judges, headed by Sonny Owens.

Areas selected for running the event are the D River Wayside, Road’s End, Canyons, Nelscott, Otter Rock or Mulligans. The event location will be posted last minute, on AwesomeSurfVideos.com, on Friday, September 14. In the event of severe weather conditions, the team cup will turn into a pool tournament at BK Mulligans Sports Bar, which is why the event is called the Either/Or Team Cup (either a surf event or a surf-oriented pool tournament).

Dogs take part in surfing contest: Video

Monday, June 6 2011, 10:23 BST Around 50 dogs competed to become a surfing champion at this year's annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition.

The surfing contest, in its sixth iteration, took place at Imperial Beach in California and saw the dogs divided into categories based on size and whether or not their owners would ride with them on the surfboard.

The canines were judged on various criteria, including style, time spent on a wave and confidence, while winners were awarded a trip to a San Diego resort and are to be featured in magazine Modern Dog.

Watch a video of the dogs surfing below:

Profits from the event were donated to DonorsChoose, an online charity where public school teachers can get their projects funded.

Massive Surfing Event on Oregon Coast Begins

Massive Surfing Event on Oregon Coast Begins

Published 11/01/2010

(Lincoln City, Oregon) - The 2010 Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, November 2, under what looks to be the biggest conditions ever for the Nelscott event.

Conditions forecast for Tuesday are for light and variable winds, and very large surf.  If the system continues to develop as expected, swell should be 21 feet at 16-18 seconds. This is expected to produce swells upwards of 30 feet.

Nelscott District of Lincoln CityThat is quite a bit larger than previous years. The largest swell that the event has run in was 17 feet at 17 seconds, which produced waves in the range of 30 to 40 feet.

The Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic is a unique event in that a set of weeks in October and November are set aside as when the event may take place, but the actual date is dependent on certain surf condition. The exact date of the event is announced 48 hours ahead of time when conditions are right.

“This swell caught my eye the second it started showing up on the charts,” said John Forse, event founder. “The wind and a competing south swell were my only concerns, and now it looks as though neither will be an issue.”

The Nelscott Reef event is the only big wave event to have been held every year since its inception, and it has been called on what turned out to be the best days of each year.

Conditions this size will be a major test for the organizers and competitors, as the 2010 contest will be the first time the event is paddle in only. It has been a tow-in event up until now, with boats towing contestants out to the famed reef – about a mile offshore.

The change to paddle in coupled with the event being a part of the Big Wave World Tour has ensured that some of the top names in the industry will be present on Tuesday. Also, the Nelscott event looks to be the first big wave contest to feature women.

"I have a lot of respect for some of the older guys we invited that have chosen to step aside and let some of the up and coming talent take a turn,” Forse said. "People like Gary Linden and Ross Clarke Jones have given up their spots for younger surfers to have a chance. It is the ultimate show of sportsmanship in my opinion."

The Nelscott Reef sits a mile out to sea, and creates massive sources of amusement for surfers. It was actually only discovered in recent years.

The Nelscott Reef web page contains the most up to date information on the event.  People can sign up for email alerts as well. The Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic is honored and proud be a part of the Big Wave World Tour and promote big wave surfing
internationally. For more info go to and www.nelscottreef.com and www.bigwaveworldtour.com

While weather has been in the "raining cats and dogs" category along the coast, those conditions are expected to clear considerably over the next days. Click here for Oregon Coast Weather.
