Inquest family anger at health trust

29 April 2014 Last updated at 14:50 John Moore-Robinson John Moore-Robinson died hours after being discharged from hospital A second inquest into the death of a Stafford Hospital patient is adjourned so potential witnesses from the hospital can be located.

John Moore-Robinson, 20, was treated at the hospital on 1 April 2006, after a mountain biking accident.

He collapsed at his Leicestershire home after being discharged with an undiagnosed ruptured spleen.

Coroner Catherine Mason adjourned the Leicester Town Hall hearing until 2 July.

'Fearless inquest' Continue reading the main story
The trust now needs to go back and do a lot of soul-searching. We are speechless, we are shocked, totally shocked”

End Quote His parents, Janet and Frank Robinson, wept as Ms Mason said she had to stop the new inquest, which opened on Monday, so attempts could be made to trace the hospital staff.

She said there were at least two more nurses and a doctor who had been on rota the day Mr Moore-Robinson was treated and may be required to give evidence.

Mr Moore-Robinson's parents have been campaigning for the fresh inquest for eight years.

Ms Mason told the hearing: "I am sorry I'm in this position, but if I'm to do the right thing I must not ignore what I now know.

"I must not and I will not ignore it. To do so will not satisfy a full and fearless inquest."

The coroner told David Lewis, representing Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Stafford Hospital: "I want proper and open disclosure of anyone who was involved in April 2006."

Trust apology

Mr Lewis apologised to Mr Moore-Robinson's family on behalf of the trust.

The inquest heard earlier that Mr Moore-Robinson had been riding with two friends when he was "catapulted" from the bike and the handlebars twisted, digging into him.

Post-mortem tests showed he died from internal bleeding and a ruptured spleen.

Commenting after the coroner's decision to adjourn the inquest, Frank Robinson said: "We are eight years in now and we are still being told there has not been full disclosure.

"The trust now needs to go back and do a lot of soul-searching. We are speechless, we are shocked, totally shocked."

The first inquest returned a narrative verdict but Mr Moore-Robinson's family argued for a fresh hearing after new evidence came to light.

Scottish health app surprise hit

21 June 2011 Last updated at 06:59 By Eleanor Bradford BBC Scotland Health Correspondent SIGN app on hand-held computer The SIGN app can be downloaded to iphones, android phones and hand-held computers A new app for smartphones and tablets designed by the Scottish NHS has become one of the most popular free medical apps available for download.

It outlines what kind of care patients should expect when they suffer from particular medical conditions.

The SIGN app (SIGN stands for the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) was the idea of Prof John Kinsella.

He works in intensive care at Glasgow's Royal Infirmary, and is also a member of an NHS organisation called Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

Prof Kinsella realised he needed a quicker way of accessing the latest NHS guidelines.

"The problem is that clinical guidance is sometimes in a paper form which is difficult to find, or it can be accessed on the internet which means logging in and often you've got to log out of some other programme first," he said.

"In that period you are losing valuable time when you should be doing some other task. It is basically a delay, and sometimes a delay prevents you from doing it at all."

The real advantage is that these guidelines are easy to access by members of the public”

End Quote Prof John Kinsella Healthcare Improvement Scotland Mobile phones no longer interfere with medical equipment, meaning doctors and other medical staff can use smartphones and hand-held tablet computers while working on the ward.

The app, which was initially available for iPhones but is now also available to Android phones, has proved a surprise hit.

It offers guidelines on a wide range of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, diabetes and the management of asthma and psoriasis.

Although it has not been advertised, it has been downloaded more than 8,000 times since it was launched in April.

"The real advantage is that these guidelines are easy to access by members of the public," said Prof Kinsella.

"It is entirely logical that if you have a certain condition, it is very useful for you to be able to look up what care you should expect to receive.

"This empowers patients and makes the discussion between the doctor and patient much more well informed."

As well as being a useful gadget if you live in the UK, the app is also being downloaded by smartphone users all over the world.

Hand-held tablet computer with apps The SIGN app makes information available to health professionals and members of the public

Dr Helena Liira is a GP in Finland.

She said: "I could use it to update my information on the diseases that are covered. I can check whether my practice is according to the guidelines.

"I cannot use it for all purposes because it only covers, at the moment, 11 topics so it is quite limited but it is a good way to check what's going on in these important diseases."

As NHS Scotland produces more guidance on a larger range of conditions the SIGN app will be updated.

The app also has the potential to save the NHS money by being more environmentally friendly.

Until now Healthcare Improvement Scotland has had to print more than 15,000 paper copies of every guideline it produces.

Cat Litter Box Health

Cats are the most popular pets in the United States. According to the latest version of the U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook (2002 Edition) there were almost 70 Million pet cats in the United States. Why are cats so popular? There are as many answers to this question as there are cat owners, but the low health risks cats pose to their owners is certainly near the top of this list. Even though the potential health risks cats pose to people are small, it is important that cat owners are aware of these risks and understand how to reduce them.
The majority of all risks stemming from cat ownership are associated with the cat litter box and/or cat feces. There are two categories of risks. The first category contains health risks posed by bacteria and parasites to both cat owners and their cats. The second category contains injuries resulting from an automatic litter box or self cleaning litter box.
Primarily the health problems experienced by cat owners or their cats come from the first category and the most significant of these risks is called Toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a tiny parasite called Toxoplasma gondii which can be found in raw or undercooked meat, unwashed fruits and vegetables, dirty cat litter boxes and outdoor soil where cat feces can be found. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 60 million people in the United States may be infected with the Toxoplasma parasite(1). Fortunately, very few people ever experience any symptoms because a healthy person's immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness. However, pregnant women and individuals who have compromised immune systems, such as individuals infected with the HIV virus, are at risk and should take precautions to avoid being infected by the parasite. For people in this group a Toxoplasma infection could cause serious health problems to the individual or to a pregnant woman’s unborn child.
Again, most of the 60 million plus American’s infected with Toxoplasmosis parasite will never experience any symptoms. Most of those who do experience symptoms will simply think they have the Flu as the most common symptoms include swollen glands, fever, headache, muscle pain, or a stiff neck. For those in the high risk group, Toxoplasmosis can cause damage to the brain, eyes and internal organs. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, children born with Toxoplasma gondii can suffer from hearing loss, mental retardation, and blindness with some children developing brain or eye problems years after birth(2). The CDC estimates that 400-4000 fetuses are infected with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite each year and as many as 80 infants die from Toxoplasmosis annually(2).
So how does an individual contract Toxoplasmosis? A Toxoplasmosis infection is caused by ingesting the Toxoplasma gondi parasite. Most cat owners are infected with the parasite by accidentally ingesting infected cat feces. This happens when a person touches their mouth after handling a cat litter box, working in a garden or sand box or touching anything that has come in contact with cat feces(3).
People in the high risk group may wonder whether or not they should give up their cat to avoid infection. According to the CDC, it is not necessary for cat lovers to give up their cats, but it is important for them to protect themselves from infections. The USFDA makes the following recommendations for avoiding infections(2):
1) If possible, have someone else change the litter box. If you have to clean it, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water afterwards.
2) Change the litter box daily. The parasite doesn't become infectious until one to five days after the feces are deposited in the litter box.
3) Wear gloves when gardening in a garden or handling sand from a sandbox because cats may have excreted feces in them. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and warm water afterwards.
4) Cover outdoor sandboxes to prevent cats from using them as litter boxes.
5) Feed your cat commercial dry or canned food. Never feed your cat raw meat because it can be a source of the Toxoplasmosis gondii parasite.
6) Keep indoor cats indoors. Be especially cautious if you bring outdoor cats indoors.
7) Avoid stray cats, especially kittens.
8) Don't get a new cat while you're pregnant.
Safer Child, Inc. makes the following additional recommendations(4):
1) Have your veterinarian test your cat for the Toxoplasmosis parasite. If you cat is infected, you may want to consider having someone else keep your cat during your pregnancy.
2) Keep sandboxes covered to prevent cats from using the sandbox as a litter box.
3) Be aware of neighborhood sandboxes as the parasite can be brought home on shoes, clothing and toys.
Similar to Toxoplasmosis, Escherichia coli (commonly called E. coli) can infect humans thru contact with feline fecal material, although the primary means of infection is thru ingestion or raw or undercooked meats. E. Coli is a bacterium commonly found in the intestinal tract of humans and animals. Almost all strains of the bacteria are harmless. However a few strains can produce powerful toxins and cause severe illness, especially in children under 5 years of age(5). Symptoms usually include diarrhea and abdominal cramps. In children under 5, 2%-7% of E. coli cases can cause kidney failure. Fortunately, E. coli is easy to prevent. Using the preventative measures, outlined above for Toxoplasmosis will greatly reduce the risks of you or your children contracting an E. coli infection.
In addition to these human risks, there are a few health risks cat litter boxes actually pose to cats that cat owners should be aware of. Just as a dirty litter box poses health risks to humans, cats are equally at risk if forced to use a dirty litter box. Since cats stay clean by licking themselves, allowing a cat’s litter box to get too dirty can cause infections when a cat cleans it’s paws after using the dirty litter box. The most common infection is a urinary tract infection, and although this type of infection is rarely fatal it can be very uncomfortable for your cat and will most likely require treatment by your veterinarian.
Finally, a lesser-known health risk to cats is actually caused by cat litter itself. What many cat owners do not realize is that some types of cat litter can be harmful or even fatal to their cat. Both clumping and non-clumping litters pose health problems to cats. Clumping cat litters are probably the most popular type of cat litter because of their convenience, hygienic qualities and the fact that clumping litters are required for use in self-cleaning litter boxes. Unfortunately, some clumping litters can be harmful to cats. Clay based clumping litters can contain the mineral sodium bentonite, which can be harmful or fatal to your cat. It is best to avoid using clay based cat litters, especially with kittens. Wheat or corn based clumping litters such as Swheat Scoop, World’s Best Cat Litter and Littermaid cat litter work very well and are non-toxic(6).
By their very nature, non-clumping litters do not absorb and isolate a cat’s urine or feces like clumping litters do. As a result, it is much harder to keep your cat’s litter box clean when using non-clumping litter. When using non-clumping litter it is important to frequently clean and disinfect the litter box itself to reduce the chance of bacterial buildups that can cause urinary or other infections in your cat.
The second category of health risks covers injuries caused by an automatic litter box or self cleaning litter box. Occurrences of this type of injury are rare, but they can happen. An automatic or self cleaning litter box does just what it’s name implies. Usually between 10-15 minutes after a cat uses the litter box, the litter box automatically cleans itself by “sweeping” or “raking” the cat waste into a sealed compartment or bag. For cat owners, injuries can occur if a small child or toddler plays with the automatic litter box during the cleaning cycle. All major brands of automatic litter boxes contain sensors to prevent the cleaning mechanism from activating when a cat or other foreign object is inside the box. However, children can still be injured if they put their hand inside the cleaning mechanism in such a manner as to avoid the sensors.
Although these types of injuries are very rare it is best to take precautions. Placing the litter box in a location where your cat can get to it but small children can’t is an easy method. This is good advice for any litter box as this is the best way to keep children from contracting one of the illnesses described earlier in this article. If you can’t keep the automatic litter box out of a child’s reach then it is best to put the litter box inside a litter box cover. There are many types of covers and all of them will help prevent a child from reaching the litter box and the cleaning mechanism. A final option is to unplug the litter box or put it into a “manual operation” mode. Both of these options will require the cat owner to start the cleaning cycle whenever necessary. Although this reduces some of the convenience of an automatic litter box it certainly removes the danger to children.
Automatic or self cleaning litter boxes are completely safe for almost all cats. However, most manufacturers recommend that the litter box be used in “manual operation” mode for cats under 5 lbs. Cats under 5 lbs many not be large enough to activate the sensors and the cleaning mechanism could cause injury. Since most adult cats weigh over 5 lbs, it is only necessary to use the “manual operation” mode until kittens grow to 5 lbs.
This article is not intended to dissuade anyone from owning a cat. 70 Million cat owners can’t be wrong; cats make great pets! So, if you already own a cat or are thinking of becoming a cat owner it simply makes good sense to be aware of the health risks associated with cat ownership. Understanding the risks can definately increase the enjoyment of cat ownership.

Solve Your Cats Health Problems and Allergies, and Save Money, Too!

All pet owners know that health care for your cat can be the most expensive part of pet ownership. Vet bills are never cheap, and pets have a knack for getting sick right when we can never afford it. Thankfully, while emergencies and accidents will always happen, by investing in your cats' health with a strong preventative health program, as well as proper diet and effective nutritional supplements, you can ward off one of the most destructive and disruptive medical problem in cats- allergies.

Allergies and Cats- a Destructive Cycle

A great many cat owners are familiar with the painful and disruptive effects of feline allergies. Chronically irritated or itchy skin, chronic sneezing, wheezing and coughing, runny eyes and nose, chronic vomiting and diarrhea and even self-mutilation are just some of the symptoms of allergies in cats.

Just as in humans, an allergic reaction in cats occurs when the immune system begins to overreact to a seemingly normal substance or material. Often times, a cat can become allergic to a substance suddenly, after being exposed to it with no problems for months or even years prior.

Flea and Skin Allergies

Flea allergies are one of the most common types of allergies in cats. In "normal" cats, fleas and flea bites may cause minor irritation and itching, which often will resolve quickly once the fleas are removed. Cats with flea-bite allergies have a much stronger reaction, with intense itching causing hair loss and open sores- even from just one flea bite.

The typical signs of flea-bite allergies in cats are the presence of fleas, intense itching, and sores and scabs on the skin. These sores, caused by repeated itching and chewing, can lead to a skin infection.

If you take your cat to the vet, typically it will be treated with anti-inflammatory medication (steroids) and antibiotics for several weeks. While this route may solve the immediate problem of the skin infection, it does nothing for the underlying cause- the fleas and the allergies- leaving your cat open to future allergies and repeated courses of unhealthy steroids and antibiotics, both of which can contribute to a weakened immune system, and therefore increasing the occurrence of allergies.

The other choice is to use natural alternatives such as herbal anti-inflammatory and a soil-based probiotic. And while these are both highly effective and non-toxic, instead of treating skin allergies and the resulting skin infections after they occur, you can prevent severe allergic flea reactions in your cat by removing the source of the allergies (fleas), and by preventing your cats' immune system from overreacting.

Prevention requires proper supplementation to improve the quality of your cat's immune system.

Oil based nutrients, common in the human natural health spectrum as fatty acid supplements are equally vital to feline health, and especially in the case of skin and coat problems. A proper lipid supplementation, based from one of the most potent antioxidants known to science, Krill Oil, as well as other essential lipids can help to supplement your cats' immune system, reduce the severity of allergic reactions, improve the condition of your cat's skin and reduce healing times.

Food Allergies

Food allergies in cats are one of the most frustrating allergies to deal with. Many times a cat may develop a food sensitivity or allergy to a type of food despite being fed, even though your cat may have eaten that same food for many years with no problems. Further complicating the diagnosis of food allergies are the myriad of ingredients that typically make up most of today's commercial cat foods.

Cats typically manifest food allergies in two different ways- chronic digestive problems (i.e. vomiting and diarrhea that occur more than 3 times a week) and through skin allergies, such as itching, scratching and losing hair.

Cats can be allergic to any component in their food. The more common cause of food allergies in cats is the highly processed, grain based nature of commercial cat food. It is the protein in these grains that cause allergies in the form of skin rashes, digestive problems, and even problems with stiff joints and arthritis.

Feeding the Way Nature Intended

Cats are carnivores by nature. Their systems require meat. In order to be healthy, cats must eat a diet that mimics the one they would eat in the wild- namely whole prey. In the wild, cats eat virtually the entire content of their caught prey. Their protein comes from the bulk of the kill, most of their water intake comes directly from the water in the body of the kill, and the only grain they ingest is that which is in the stomach of their prey.

Unfortunately, commercial cat foods do not place the same emphasis on pure protein that the cat needs to survive, substituting low levels of grains and carbohydrates. Meat by-products (the parts of the animal unfit for human consumption), rendered meat, plant matter and carbohydrates, are the staples and fillers of commercial cat foods. They have very little nutritional benefit to cats, and, in fact, cause a myriad of their own health problems as a result.

The natural prey of cats consists of at least 65% water, and historically cats evolved from the desert, where they had to rely on their prey as a primary source of water. Cats do not naturally drink much supplemental water, yet by feeding dry food to cats with negligible water content, it requires cats to increase their water consumption, or else become chronically dehydrated.

Cats typically manifest food allergies in two ways- chronic digestive problems (such as chronic diarrhea and vomiting) and skin problems, such as chronic itching, recurring skin infections, yeast infections and ear infections. All of these symptoms of allergies are uncomfortable and damaging to your cat's health, and typically require repeated courses of steroids, antibiotics and other medications. Unfortunately, by continuing to feed the same food, the causative factor of the allergy-food that is nutritionally indigestible and virtually "foreign" to the cats system-the allergies will continue to reoccur.

Instead of creating a revolving door of allergy symptoms, vet visits, medications and cost, preventing allergies through a proper diet and nutritional supplementation is the more cost effective, and more importantly, the much more healthy alternative for your cat.

Home and commercially prepared raw diets seek to mimic the cats' natural diet- wild prey-, by eliminating the foreign carbohydrates and grains that are the causes of so many food allergies. This alone will go a long way to restoring his or her health. Be mindful that raw meat, fowl, or fish is not sufficient by itself.

In addition to feeding your cat a nutritionally sound Raw Diet, proper supplementation insures that all of your cat's nutritional, probiotic, vitamin, mineral and fatty acid requirements are being met, and properly assimilated by the body.

Cats and Asthma

Of all the types of allergies in cats, asthma can be the most heartbreaking to watch your cat endure- and in severe cases, it can even be deadly.

As in humans, asthma attacks in cats are caused by an allergic reaction of the respiratory tract to particulates in the air. The precipitating cause stimulates the mucosal lining of the throat and airway to secrete mucous and swell, leading to difficulty breathing, wheezing and coughing. In severe cases, the breathing difficulties can lead to respiratory distress, an abdominal effort to breath, and the swelling may become so severe that the airway becomes totally obstructed, leading to death.

Typically, treatment of cats with chronic asthma is managed through long-term steroid therapy, to suppress the immune system and prevent airway swelling. Unfortunately, steroids only mask the symptoms; long-term use atrophies your cats' natural immune response. Many health problems are directly related to the long-term steroid use.

In addition to the cost of veterinary visits associated with treating asthma flare ups and medication to treat it, chronic steroid use can lead to other health problems such as liver dysfunction and even failure, kidney failure, chronic dehydration and lessen the body's ability to fight viruses, bacteria, simple infections and even cancer.

By treating the underlying cause of your cat's asthma, you can prevent the life-long cycle of steroid administration, continuing respiratory problems and more severe health problems down the road.

As asthma, at its core, is an allergy caused by a heightened immune system, every effort must be made to remove potential allergens from the cats' environment. Changing your asthmatic cat's food to a Raw Diet can help to eliminate further allergens from your cat's system, giving the immune system less irritants to react to. In addition, by proving a carefully balanced probiotic, vitamin, mineral, lipid (oil) and amino-acid supplements to your cat, you are insuring that your cat's body utilizes the full potential of the raw diet.

In addition, the powerful anti-oxidant effects of soil-based probiotics, fatty acids, vital lipids and essential enzymes are scientifically proven to naturally reduce inflammation.

Moreover, they support and create a healthy immune system capable of dealing with emerging health crises, while preventing the terrible immune system overreactions that cause asthma attacks.

Save Money... and Save Your Cat

Conventionally speaking, allergies in cats are expensive to treat. Modern medicine has yet to provide us with a cure to allergies. Instead, veterinary medicine often provides little more than a "band aid" for treating your cat's allergies. Failure to address the actual cause- a dysfunctional immune system reacting to the unnatural way that domestic cats have been fed and kept leads to repeated courses of medications that can do more harm than good.

By addressing the core of your pet's health through a proper diet, as nature intended, and supplementing and supporting the immune system, you can save your cat years of suffering from allergies, create a healthier cat from the inside out, and save money on repeated treatments that don't work, and cause more problems than they solve.

Cabarrus Health Alliance Groundbreaking

We heartily welcome our soon-to-be neighbors in downtown Kannapolis! On Friday the Cabarrus Health Alliance broke ground on their new facility at 300 Mooresville Rd., at the corner of Dale Earnhardt Blvd. (across from Southern Select Credit Union). Their 61,000 square foot, environmentally friendly building will be completed by early 2012 and will bring additional activity to the downtown Kannapolis area. Over 200 public health workers and professionals, as well as patients and other visitors will be an important part of our downtown fabric.

CHA will move from their current facility at the corner of Dale Earnhardt Blvd and S. Cannon Blvd., allowing Cabarrus County to use the existing facility for additional space for Social Services and other departments.

CHA is considered nationally to serve as a model for an innovative public health agency. CHA has its own governing board (versus being a county department) and provides dental and health care services (like immunizations, prenatal care, and school health nurses), as well as addressing health and sanitation inspections, environmental health, and promoting healthy lifestyles. The proximity of CHA to the NC Research Campus will allow for easier collaboration amongst these organizations. The vision is for CHA to be the entity to help deliver the science coming out of NCRC to benefit local citizens. Filed under: Uncategorized
