Syria 'torture' photos shown to UN

15 April 2014 Last updated at 23:48 (L-R) UN representative from France Gerard Araud, and forensic pathologist Dr Stuart Hamilton give a report on the allegations of torture in Syria at the United Nations on 15 April 2014 in New York City. The photos are among 55,000 digital images apparently provided by a former Syrian police photographer Graphic photographs of prisoners allegedly tortured by Syrian government forces have been shown to members of the UN Security Council.

The images, reportedly smuggled out by a defector, appear to show evidence of abuse, including beatings, strangulation and long-term starvation.

The photos were first released in January in a report commissioned by Qatar, which backs Syria's opposition.

The Syrian government has dismissed the report, saying it has no credibility.

The meeting was called by France, which wants the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate crimes against humanity.

President Bashar al-Assad's main ally, Russia, has the power to veto that.

'Gruesome'

Security Council members fell silent as the images were shown on Tuesday, said France's UN ambassador, Gerard Araud.

Forensic pathologist Dr Stuart Hamilton gives a report on the allegations of torture in Syria at the United Nations on April 15, 2014 Investigators have examined thousands of images of dead prisoners

"The gruesome images of corpses bearing marks of starvation, strangulation and beatings... indicate that the Assad regime has carried out systematic, widespread and industrial killing," said Samantha Power, US ambassador to the UN.

"Nobody who sees these images will ever be the same."

'Credible'

The report, by three former war crimes prosecutors, is based on the evidence of a defected military police photographer, referred to only as Caesar

He, along with others, reportedly smuggled about 55,000 digital images of some 11,000 dead detainees out of Syria.

He did not claim to have witnessed killings or torture himself.

The photographs in the report cover the period from the start of the uprising in March 2011 until August last year.

All but one of the bodies shown are male. Some had no eyes, and some showed signs of electrocution.

Syria's Justice Ministry dismissed the photos and accompanying report as "lacking objectiveness and professionalism", according to the Associated Press.

But one of the authors of the report, former Sierra Leone Special Court prosecutor David Crane, said the photographs - and the witness himself - were "credible and sustainable in a court of law".

While Caesar's photos would appear to offer evidence of war crimes by the Syrian government, both Mr Araud and Mr Crane said that crimes had also been committed by opposition forces.

More than 150,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, with millions forced to flee their homes.

Unofficial 'party' photos wanted

3 May 2011 Last updated at 12:42 Thousands turned up for the unofficial street party About 6,000 people turned up to the unauthorised party Police investigating scenes of disorder at a massive unauthorised party in Glasgow have appealed for revellers to send them their videos and photos.

About 6,000 people turned up at Kelvingrove Park, on the day of the Royal Wedding, after the event was organised through Facebook.

After trouble flared, police made 22 arrests, with 11 officers being hurt.

Police want anyone with images or footage of unrest, to e-mail them to Contactus@strathclyde.pnn.police.uk

Two teenagers organised the party through the social networking site, Facebook, but Glasgow City Council warned people not to attend, expressing concern over safety.

Officers injured

Although the party began peacefully, scuffles broke out and police officers moved in to clear the area.

Mounted officers were called in after reports that some police had been pelted with bottles.

More than 100 officers attended the incident.

Kelvingrove Park Police and paramedics attended after thousands turned up to the park

One of the officers who was hurt was taken to hospital with a head injury but released after treatment.

Det Insp Fil Capaldi, of Strathclyde Police, said: "A major enquiry team has been set up and officers are currently trawling through CCTV footage in an effort to gather more information on the incident and trace those responsible for the trouble.

"We will ensure that those who committed crimes are traced and brought to justice.

"I know that many people who attended the park took photos and video footage, and I would urge them to forward their photos and footage to us to assist with our enquiries."

Police said that many of the 22 arrests had been for alleged offences of breach of the peace and culpable and reckless conduct.

Meanwhile, Glasgow City Council is to explore legal options for recovering the cost - £25,000 - of cleaning up Kelvingrove Park after the gathering.

The council warned beforehand that the gathering was not authorised and outlined concerns over health and safety.

Officials will also discuss the involvement of any clubs or licence holders in the event with the council's licensing board.

The End of Western Credibility:Will Democracy Become Islam’s Best Friend? – Spiegel article and photos

A Commentary by Jakob Augstein

Millions of people in the Middle East want freedom, just as Eastern Europeans once did. Twenty years ago, the West was a role model, but it betrays its own values. In doing so, it is also strengthening its enemy: militant Islamism.

Photo restoration of animal photos

Posted by Photo Restoration Man on August 20, 2009

Photo restoration of animal or pet photos is just as important as restoring photos of your family. After all they are family too. Here I am showing the progress through restoring photo a dog.

Restoring pet photos

The photo is heavily damaged but with some careful thought it can be restored.

Restoring pet photos

The dog’s toe pad has been replaced with the large black foot pad but scaled down and rotated and squashed. Above that some shadow has been cloned into the white space as in picture 1

Restoring pet photos

You can see the muzzle has been cleaned up a bit here, using the patch tool and clone tools.

Restoring pet photos

I have also copied the yellow dog toy from the left and pasted it to the right. I pasted again and flipped the yellow ball and with the patch and clone rebuilt the right hand side of the toy. I made sure there was some flash shadow around the ball in a slightly red tinted shadow to match the other side.

Finished cleaning up the muzzle and shadow underneath with clone tools and patch.

Here I have used the left side of the leg and clone upward towards the ball. I flipped this leg edge and used it for the right side.

Fortunately the customer had another photo of the dog lying down and I able to distort and warp the rear leg to replace much of the missing leg.

Restoring pet photos

From the second photo I was able to use some belly fur and shade it with the dodge and burn tools. I added some flash shadows behind the newly added leg parts.

I reduced the red tint to the back and grey sofa and zoomed out for the finished product.

Hopefully you will look after your photos and not need to get your pet photos restored.
