The fortunes of the Archer family - in the Borsetshire village of Ambridge - were being followed by the British public nearly 10 years before the first glimpse of Weatherfield's cobbles, and more than three decades before anyone had heard of Walford's Albert Square.
As the Radio 4 series celebrates its 60th anniversary on 1 January 2011, the Magazine takes a nostalgic look back at just a few of the stories and characters that have made Ambridge their home, with help from the BBC archives.
