Nestle reports slow first quarter

15 April 2014 Last updated at 11:41 Nestle company logo Despite the slow start, Nestle predicts faster growth later in the year Nestle, the world's largest food company, has reported its worst first-quarter sales growth since 2009.

Unusual weather, a late Easter, poor sales in emerging markets and cost-conscious Europeans contributed to the poor performance, said the company.

Sales growth for the period was 4.2%, 2.6% due to real internal growth and 1.6% to price increases.

Despite the lacklustre start, Nestle said it anticipated a good year ahead, thanks to a roll-out of new products.

Nestle has some 8,000 brands, with a wide range of products across a number of markets.

Our organic growth in the first months of 2014 was in line with expectations and driven by volume rather than price”

End Quote Paul Buckle Chief Executive The small increase was partly due to cold weather conditions in North America, which made people shop less.

Furthermore, frugal shoppers in Europe had been opting for cheaper brands, with sales in the region falling by 0.8%, said the company.

A later Easter in 2014 disrupted the company further, pushing expected chocolate sales into the second quarter.

The strength of the Swiss franc also hurt the company, with currency depreciations in emerging markets unable to make up for weak growth elsewhere.

The company said these "substantial" currency fluctuations were the reason for its net revenue decline of 5.1% to 20.8 billion francs ($23.6 billion).

Looking ahead

Despite the slow start, Nestle predicts faster growth in its second quarter.

"We confirm our full-year outlook: performance will be weighted to the second half, outperforming the market, with organic growth around 5%," said chief executive Paul Buckle.

"Our organic growth in the first months of 2014 was in line with expectations and driven by volume rather than price."

With consumer spending low, the continued roll-out of new products was responsible for maintaining growth in difficult market conditions, particularly in North America, said Nestle.

In Western Europe in particular, France, Germany and the UK struggled.

Nespresso maintained its strong growth momentum, despite increased competition from competing brands.

Nestle shares have gained 2.5% so far this year.

First 'quadruple rainbow' imaged

6 October 2011 Last updated at 14:29 By Jason Palmer Science and technology reporter, BBC News Tertiary and quaternary rainbows (Michael Theusner/Applied Optics) The third (l) and fourth (r) rainbows appear closer to the sun, rather than opposite it as with the first and second, which would have been behind the photographer Scientists have captured the first image of a "quaternary" rainbow - the fourth rainbow caused by the bending of light through water in the air.

This refraction frequently creates a visible second rainbow, but until now, no one had caught sight of the fainter third and fourth arcs that the process creates in a different part of the sky.

The first tertiary, or third, rainbow has only just been caught on film.

Digitally enhanced pictures of the two effects appear in Applied Optics.

Unfortunately, the pictures are not as striking as more familiar images of double rainbows - and some image processing was the only way to make the arcs visible at all.

That is principally due to the fact that the tertiary and quaternary rainbows are by definition far fainter than their more familiar cousins.

What forms a normal rainbow is the collective action of rays of sunlight bending through raindrops; the constituent colours of the white light are slightly separated in the process because they travel at slightly different speeds in water.

Much of that bent and separated light then exits the drops, appearing for a given observation point to focus in an arc opposite the Sun.

However, some of the light takes another bounce within the drop, being bent at a different angle as it passes, creating the second rainbow.

Even smaller proportions make a third and a fourth bounce, and exit in a direction close to the source of the incoming light.

The rainbows that these bounces produce are the faint tertiary and quaternary arcs that, until now, have never been captured on film.

Bow hunt

A renewed hunt for the elusive rainbows started with Raymond Lee, a meteorologist at the US Naval Academy, who combed 250 years of scientific literature for the only recorded evidence of tertiary rainbows: he found just five examples.

Tertiary rainbow (Michael Grossmann/Applied Optics) The first photo of a tertiary rainbow still requires a close look

He studied the conditions in which those five occurred and came up with a recipe for spotting them, also published in Applied Optics.

He recommended trying to find them against dark clouds after a storm with evenly sized drops - and he challenged rainbow-hunters to seek out those conditions.

Michael Grossmann of Arbeitskreis Meteore, the German association for the observation of atmospheric phenomena, went hunting for the tertiary effect in May this year, and found it after a storm in Kaempfelbach in south-western Germany.

Because the effect is so faint, a number of shots had to be taken and averaged after the fact, along with a digital enhancement known as unsharp masking, to show evidence of the tertiary rainbow.

Then in June, another rainbow-hunter, Michael Theusner, caught another tertiary rainbow and its adjacent quaternary counterpart near Bremerhaven in northern Germany - after processing the images in the same way.

Unfortunately, the rare conditions that lend themselves to a nearly visible tertiary or quaternary rainbow, along with the post-production needed to make them apparent, mean that amateur skygazers are unlikely as ever to catch sight of one.

But after 250 years of scattered reports, the record finally holds a picture of them.

Your New Cat: Why Are the First 24 Hours So Important?

The cage was small, but the people were nice and Tiger felt safe. He was fed, petted and regularly groomed. Still, it wasn't home. Tiger had been 'home', and still had vague memories of the woman who had cared for him and the other cats who lived with her.

Then he had been taken to this place, and had been here so long he had almost forgotten 'home', and the woman.

There was uneasiness here, though, and Tiger felt it. Something was about to happen. Something bad.

Then two humans came in. He was put in a cage with them. He jumped up in the woman's lap. He was put in a dark place that bumped and jostled him. He heard strange, scary noises. He howled, and a male voice answered with noises he couldn't understand.

Then there was light. And TERROR!

A small hand reached for him and tried to grab him. There were people he didn't know; they all approached him. There was another cat that arched and spat.

Then, horror of horrors...

There was a dog!

Tiger fled. He fled down a long corridor and bolted through the first open door he found. He hid in the darkest place he could find...among soft and hard things he didn't recognized. He heard voices. He heard the dog bark, and he shuddered. He heard the child's high pitched voice, and a woman's voice...which were easier to bear.

He hunkered down and remained as invisible and silent as he could.

Adoption in Haste

The staff of animal shelters greet people looking for new pets with both joy and misgiving. People walk between the cages, looking over each cat, and the staff hope they will select a cat that has been there for a long time.

But they know what the people are looking for; they are looking for kittens, not adult cats.

If there are no kittens, the customers will sometimes reluctantly choose an adult cat as a "consolation prize", pay the adoption fees and cart him or her off...

Only to return the cat two or three days later.

"I'm sorry, but this cat just didn't work out. We couldn't fit it into the family."

Or...

"This cat is just too wild. We need something tamer, something that will fit in."

"What happened?" The staff member asks.

"The cat bolted and hid. It took us three days to find it, and when we finally did, we had to chase it all over the house before we caught it. We need something tamer; something that will fit in better."

So go the sad tales of the returnees... but wait, it can be worse for cats adopted in other ways.

"The landlord won't let me keep her, could you please take her in?"

People who adopt strays off the street, or a friend's cat, many times don't realize the full extent of the things they need to do for their new cat:

o Prepare their house to receive their cat

o Take care of their cat's medical needs

o Make sure their other cats have protection from disease

o Take care of their cat's physical needs

o Properly introduce their cat to their live-in companions, children and other pets

And perhaps most importantly:

o Prepare themselves for a good relationship with their new cat

People who have never owned cats before don't really realize what a cat is: A highly intelligent, independent animal which needs love and affection daily - but is not a dog.

Cats will bond with people, just as dogs do, but they don't always bond with the person who has adopted them. They will choose whom they like, much to the consternation of the person who "picked them up" hoping to have acquired a new friend.

This is one very good reason why the first 24 hours is so important. It is in during that period that your cat will decide whom she wants to bond with.

Unless you know what you are doing, it might not be with you.

Time

A cat needs time spent with her. One of the big mistakes busy people make is to fail to realize that they have busy schedules that don't allow them to spend enough time with their newly adopted cat.

This could ultimately result in your cat running off. If you have no time to spend with your cat, she will not choose your house as "her den". She will go out searching for another one, and you could be soon reporting a "lost cat".

Or, to your consternation, you will find that the cat you thought would be a loving companion has bonded with another member of your household...somebody who did have the time to spend.

Money

A lot of people don't count the cost of pet ownership. In their exuberance to adopt a cat, they forget that they don't have the budget to keep her. Belatedly, they discover they don't have the cash on hand to buy their new feline's basic necessities or give her the medical attention she is most certainly going to need.

Many people shun pet medical insurance, not realizing that the same things that happen to people happen to cats, and can cost large sums of money to cure. This can result in losing their beloved pet because the price to save her is "just too high".

Medical Needs

Some people who adopt strays or cats owned by friends don't realize the full extent of the medical attention their new cat needs:

o A complete physical examination

o A complete vaccination regimen

o Spaying or neutering

In particular, that cute kitten you brought home from a friend's litter will need a long series of vaccinations (along with boosters) that will extend over a period of a couple of years. You can't do it all in one day.

To fail in this will almost assuredly mean tragedy down the line. I know. I failed to give one of my kittens its vaccinations. I made it an outdoor cat, and it died of feline leukemia. The story definitely had a very sad ending...

Your cat's physical needs

When your cat climbs out of the carrier box for the first time, will you be equipped with the essentials?

Or, will you discover that you need these things later...and bring them in one at a time, after your cat has defecated in the corner, started scratching the furniture, or begun some other unauthorized behavior you are not prepared for? (And, be advised, a cat is a very obsessed animal...once she starts doing something, it is very hard to change it).

Making sure you have what you need to receive your new cat is vital...and you must have the basics on hand before you bring her home.

First introductions

So, when your cat first climbs out of her carrier, is she going to be set upon by every member of your household all at once? And when she does, will she flee in terror, trying to find the safest and darkest corner she can find?

Or will you introduce her gradually... to try to reduce the trauma as much as possible so she can adapt to and feel at home in her new situation?

Your technique for doing that can be a deciding factor in whether or not your cat adapts to your home immediately, by the next day or the next month, or flees the house altogether.

The days to follow

Do you know how to take care of your new cat in the days to come, assuming you handled your first introductions well? Do you know about allergies, special foods, bathing, grooming, hair balls, removing urine, training and teaching without frightening and alienating her, and a multitude of other situations cat owners wrestle with on a daily basis? Do you know the hazards involved in letting her become an outdoor cat?

Be prepared

As you've often heard, 'preparation is the key to success', and nowhere does that apply more appropriately than to cat ownership. If you are prepared, your adoption will probably go very smoothly.

I say probably because every cat is different. Even with the best preparation by a knowledgeable owner, a cat may still want to hide for awhile. And if you discover that's the case...

You need to know what to do.

The Key

So, that's why I wrote my book, "Your New Cat's First 24 Hours", http://www.yourcatsecrets.com, to give you everything you need to know and have, not only to get ready for your new cat and introduce her to your household, but to understand and care for her in the days to follow.

I've got to say it again: preparation...and knowledge... is the key. When you decide to adopt, I hope you won't do it in haste.

I hope you will do it knowledgeably and with understanding.

Jury finds Arviso guilty of first degree murder in Santa Nella store clerk's killing

After less than a day of deliberations, a jury found Edward Arviso guilty of first-degree murder Monday for the brutal stabbing of a man during a 2007 convenience store robbery.

The victim, Fahd Mohammed Moshin Hussein, was the manager of the Santa Nella Market on Highway 33. He was an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and Bosnia.

Arviso shook his head and exhaled heavily after Judge Brian McCabe read the jury's verdict. Meanwhile, more than 20 of Hussein's friends and family members breathed a sigh of relief. One family member pumped his fist after the jury's verdict was released. Another whispered, "Yes!"

Arviso wasn't only found guilty of first degree-murder and robbery, but also three special circumstances, including torture. Arviso committed the robbery with an accomplice, David Fagundes, who testified against the defendant as a condition of a plea agreement.

Hussein's second cousin, Kassim Shaibi, said he was glad Arviso was convicted but said it wasn't enough. Shaibi and his family wanted Arviso to receive the death penalty.

"It seems like even jail is too simple," Shaibi said. "Like they say -- an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Shaibi understands the dangers of working in convenience stores. He's the second-generation owner of a shop in the East Bay city of Pittsburg. He was shot seven times with .40-caliber bullets during a robbery at his store seven months ago. With scars on his torso, arms and legs, Shaibi knows he's lucky to be alive.

Arviso and his accomplice didn't have to kill Hussein -- they could have robbed him and let him go, Shaibi said.

The pair took $600 to $700 from the store, in addition to the victim's wallet, store keys and the digital video recorder from the store's surveillance system. Blood found on Arviso's shirt was matched to the victim.

Fagundes pleaded no contest in 2008 to manslaughter, robbery, burglary and false imprisonment charges in connection with Hussein's death. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison and agreed to testify against Arviso as a condition of his plea agreement.

Khaled Hussein, the victim's older brother, said though nothing will bring back his brother, he felt some vindication with the jury's verdict. Arviso probably will spend the rest of his life in prison. "They did a great job. These are great citizens that made this decision," Khaled Hussein said.

Arviso has a prior conviction for attempted first-degree burglary in 1984, which could extend his sentence.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Harold Nutt, prosecutor in the case, said Arviso, 49, and Fagundes, 40, lured Hussein to a bait tank in the store during the early morning hours of Jan. 25, 2007.

Arviso then hit Hussein in the back of the head with a wrench, knocking him to the ground, Nutt said.

Bleeding profusely, Hussein was dragged to a storage room where he was bound with a large zip-lock tie, Nutt said.

Arviso then stabbed Hussein in the head nine times with a fillet knife until the handle broke off, an act that took considerable strength, Nutt said.

"The knife blade had to go through bone," Nutt said during closing arguments Friday. "How much hatred, malice, ill will did it require for this defendant to drive the knife blade through Fahd Hussein's skull?"

Nutt said Arviso didn't just want to kill Hussein, but wanted to make him suffer.

Arviso is scheduled to be sentenced at 9:30 a.m. March 29 in Courtroom 5 of the Merced County Superior Court.

First Date Rules…For Girls

Ok. Here’s the rules for girls to follow, written by a guy. Again, much love to @karenahn for the suggestion.

1. Don’t be a salty sailor. Don’t swear, or smoke, or do anything else that a salty sailor would do. That includes hanging out with a bunch of dudes for extended periods of time. (In my research, I discovered that salty sailor has another meaning. It’s really inappropriate, but a perfect example of how not to act. Never reference a “salty sailor” on a first date. Don’t even click on the link.)

2. You’re probably not funny. Your brand of humour is NOT what a guy finds funny. I’m sorry ladies, Dane Cook is not funny…at all. If you want to be considered funny, throw in a line from a popular D!k-flick. “60% of the time, it works every time.” or “You’re my boy, Blue. You’re my boy.” And don’t just indiscriminately throw lines out there but tie them into the conversation.

Example 1. Guy asks, “So what do you do? What are your ambitions/goals in life?” You respond, “I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.”

Example 2. At the end of the date, Guy says, “I had a great time. Let’s do this again sometime.” You respond, “See you later, Joben.” or “Laterss on the menjay.”

If you don’t know where any of these quotes are from, a great starting point for your comedic education is by researching the “Frat Pack”. If two or more of them are in a movie together, you have to watch it.

3. Be cheerful and quirky. Keep conversations light and airy. Talk about fun and (slightly) odd things you like to do. Don’t talk about serious stuff. Never talk about serious stuff on a first date. It scares guys off. Keep your crazy hidden…PLEASE. Or better yet, don’t be crazy, ever.

4. Smile and laugh. Guys like to know they’re funny. But the sad truth is, some guys really aren’t. So practice your fake laugh. It’s essential. And at the very least, practice smiling. Dating experts say that if your date is staring at your mouth, he/she is subconsciously thinking about kissing you. So give your date something to look at. Smile, purse your lips a bit, wear some nice lip balm, and show off those pearly whites.

5. Be confident. Channel your inner Christina Aguilera and tell yourself, “I am beautiful in every single way…” If you don’t find beauty in yourself, it’ll show, and chances are, then, the guy won’t find you beautiful either. Confidence is sexy. BUT if your confidence is too close to cockiness, guys may take it as a competition. And guys don’t like to compete with girls. It stems from middle school gym class. It’s a lose-lose situation. If the girl is worse than you, you hate playing with her. If the girl is better than you, you hate playing with her.

6. I ain’t saying she’s a gold digguh. Don’t be a gold digger. If you want a sugar daddy, there are many men much, much older than me who will gladly oblige you. On a first date, don’t expect a guy to go all out. For the most part, we’re just as jaded by the prospect of finding true love as you are, and we’re not looking to spend a day’s wages on a woman we may never see again.

7. Hollywood is E-V-I-L. Ryan Gosling in “The Notebook”. EVIL. Leo Dicaprio in “Titanic”. EVIL. Shane West in “A Walk To Remember”. EVIL. You’re not going to wake up one morning and find a telescope built by hand for you so that you can see a shooting star. If you find yourself in the middle of the Atlantic with a guy, you’re both surviving. And most importantly, no one’s going to build a house for you. Hollywood has elevated women’s expectations to near impossible standards. Just remember, you aren’t Kate, Mandy, or Rachel. And unless you are, don’t have outlandish expectations. (BTW, I would build a house for Rachel McAdams)

8. Flirt…and be dreadfully obvious about it. Guys are dumb. I took an IQ test as a young teenager and the results placed me in the 99.9th percentile. My IQ was 139, genius level (Yes, I’m showing off). And even still, I can’t read camouflage flirting. So be obvious. Break the physical barrier that exists on the first date. Playfully brush his forearm with your hand. Tell him about this new shampoo you’ve been using and let him smell your hair. If the opportunity somehow comes up and you can do it without feeling sloochie (slutty&hoochie), stroke the back of his neck with your fingernails. If all these moves feel too forward for you, here’s my sure-fire move that is guaranteed to work.

Scenario. Tell Guy you’re really strong. He will laugh and disagree. Say something along the lines of, “I bet you if I punch you in the arm, it’ll hurt.” Starving for physical contact, he’ll agree to let you punch him. You punch him. He will respond in one of two ways:

A.    He will pretend it hurt. You say, “You’re pretending! Argh…You’re too strong. I really thought it would hurt.”

B.     He will laugh at your weakness. You huff and puff and say, “Argh. I really thought I could hurt you. You’re too strong.”

And there you have it. You’ve broken the physical barrier. And you’ve complimented him on his strength. Even though you’re just a “weak” girl, he’ll subconsciously feel a lot stronger.

Sidenote: If you know what a bench press is, if you’ve done P90X, if you were on the high school weightlifting team, if you’re a black belt in a martial art, take something off the punch, Butch.

9. The Carrot and Stick. Dangle the bait. Be a bit of a tease. It’s ok. Well, it’s not. It creates emotional and physical discomfort for guys, but that is necessary if you’re going to catch and keep a guy’s attention. And don’t give it up on the first date. Seriously. Make guys work for it. “Nothing worth getting is gotten easily.” And let him know it.

10. Safety first. Beware. Guys are sick and perverse. Don’t have any illusions that we’re any good. So, for a first date, follow these safety tips.

Meet in a public place.Find your own way there (Don’t let Guy know where you live).Don’t get drunk. And call/text your girlfriends at the end of the date. Who am I kidding? Women talk about everything. Of course you’re going to call your girlfriends.

11. Date me. =)

Happy fishing =).

P.S. I told you not to click on the “salty sailor” link!

My First Date Rules

First dates. There are rules. Follow them and you’ll be better for it. Now, you don’t have to. You can try and go-it alone, but you’re lowering your chances exponentially with each broken rule. But hey, even a blind squirrel occasionally gets a nut.

Rules from other sites.

AskMen.com Great site, lots of fun content.

“7 Things Women Expect on a First Date”

1. Go the extra mile – or two.

2. Be polite – not pushy.

3. Be complimentary.

4. Be curious about her.

5. Be assertive – not aggressive.

6. Always have a backup plan.

7. Leave her impressed.

Good list. But not completely accurate. Probably written from a woman’s perspective. My apologies if you’re offended, but what women say they want and what women really want, isn’t always the same. And if this 7/7 man came along, he’d probably fall right into the friend zone.

And from CNN.com, “10 First Date Rules for Guys“

1. Take charge.

2. Smile.

3. Mind your body language.

4. Ask questions.

5. Listen.

6. Use flattery, appropriately.

7. Act confident.

8. No pawing allowed.

9. Please pay. Feminism, shmeminism.

10. Say goodnight.

Another decent list. Written by a women. This is what women think they want on a first date. Don’t get me wrong, women probably do want everything that’s on these two lists, but if they got this 17/17 man, it wouldn’t work. 17/17= friend zone.

Here’s my rules for first dates (for men). And for the women, you can read, Anita Appleby’s “Of course you’re still single, take a look at yourself, you dumb slut”. Remember, these are rules for first dates.

1. Keep the first date short. 45 minutes to 1hr in length. You’ll know if you are interested within 30 minutes. She’ll probably know within 15. Don’t drag the first date on. Keep it light and casual. Keep her wanting more.

2. Keep the first date cheap. Keep it under 20 dollars. Why waste money on a woman you may never see again in your life? Don’t be fooled, you should be paying. If you let a woman pay for the date, or even go dutch, you are most likely never going to see her again. The same way that a woman shouldn’t put out on a first date, a man shouldn’t dish out on a first date. Keep her wanting more.

3. Location. Go somewhere you can talk. Go somewhere you can do something else while talking. Example. Go for a walk (short and cheap). Conversation naturally ebbs and flows, rises and falls, and if you’re sitting at a table with nothing else going on, the silence can be deafening. But if you go for a walk, you can at least point out “interesting” things or be “pensive” as you quietly look out into the distance.

3b. Have a plan. Show that you know what you’re doing by knowing where you’re going. Take her somewhere that has beauty. Examples. A quaint little coffee shop, or a small park that has some character to it.

4. Talking is not communicating. Communication is as much receiving, as it is giving. You have 2 ears and 1 mouth, so talk less and listen more. Don’t just hear what they’re saying, but absorb it. Reflect on it. Internalize it. And then be ready to use it.

5. Be ready to use it. The chance will come toward the middle or end of a date to reference something she said earlier on in the date. Do it right and you’ll show off your great listening skills. And that is how to Be witty.

6. Wit shows intelligence and so does humour. So, Be funny. Don’t be crude or vulgar with your humour. Be witty and sarcastic. Don’t laugh at your own jokes. It’s weird. The more a girl laughs, the more she will be charmed by you. Remember, that she is probably not funny. Women, aside from Ellen Degeneres and Sarah Silverman, are not funny. So, be ready with a fake grin, for when she tries.

7. Be complimentary. Women love compliments. Well, EVERYONE loves compliments. It’s an instant ego boost. Pick your compliments wisely. Don’t say, “Nice breasts”. It probably won’t go over well. If you want to compliment her physical beauty, don’t single out one aspect of her body. It’s creepy. Girls take time to look good, so show them you appreciate it. So, try something like,  “You look fantastic tonight. I love that dress on you.”  If you’re feeling really confident, go in for the cheese and add, “I just can’t take my eyes off you.” WARNING. That is an expert move. And you need to practice it. Because if you don’t, half way through that last line, you’ll be sing-talking Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”.

8. Be a bit of a douchebag. What? Yes, be douchey. Don’t be witty/humourous/charming/complimentary without mixing in some douche into the equation. Nice guys finish last. They really do. Take it from a former “nice guy”. Nice guys go straight to the friend zone. Poke fun at her. Mildly insult her. But, do NOT make fun of an obvious weakness. That’s the quick route to the asshole zone. Avoid being an asshole, but be a little mean.

9. Confidence is king. Take charge. Show her you are a man. But don’t be cocky or pretentious. You have to show her that you are a man who can take care of her. It’s something about our genes and survival of the fittest and all that jazz. You are the lion king. You are Simba. And if you’re really good at it, you may just be Mufasa.

10. Practice, practice, practice. There is always a new rule to add. So, go on many first dates. It will make you better at them. “Experience is the best teacher.”

11. My first date rules. As in, a first date with me is awesome. This last rule is for all the single women who are reading this. Hi. I’m Will.
